India: On the differences between 'Ram Rajya' of Gandhi & that of BJP/RSS | Ram Puniyani [article in Hindi]

After Gandhi's Assassination, Nehru Saw the Hindu Right as a Threat to the Indian State | Mridula Mukherjee

 The Wire - 30/Jan/2023

This year on January 30 will be exactly 75 years to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination at the hands of those against his message of non-violence and fierce defence of a syncretic India. In a series of articles and videos, The Wire takes stock of Gandhi’s murder, and delves deeper into the forces and ideas behind independent India’s first act of terror. Recent years have seen another attempt to kill Gandhi, his ideas, spirit and message. We hope to help unpack where India stands today and its future, through the lens of how the Father of the Nation’s legacy is being treated.

In little over six months after the tragedy of the Partition of India, on January 30, 1948, another tragedy visited the fledgling state. If Partition could largely be ascribed to Muslim communalism, aided by colonialism, then Hindu communalism bears the responsibility for the assassination of the “greatest living Hindu”. In Nehru’s words

:

“Communalism resulted not only in the division of the country, which inflicted a deep wound in the heart of the people which will take a long time to heal if it ever heals but also assassination of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.”

Gandhi’s assassination was a premeditated act. In November 1947, Karyanand Sharma, the CPI kisan leader from Bihar, had warned that the demand for a Hindu Raj “was very bad and behind it there was a conspiracy to murder Gandhiji  and Panditji”

. Gandhi himself understood the true nature of the abortive attempt that was made on his life on January 20, 1948. When a co-worker  wondered if the  bomb blast was accidental, he replied

: “The fool; don’t you see, there is a terrible and widespread conspiracy behind it?”

In his presidential address to the Hindu Mahasabha in 1937

, V.D. Savarkar, the creator of the concept of Hindutva, the first to propound the two-nation theory, and the organiser of the conspiracy to murder the Mahatma, declared: “India cannot be assumed today to be an unitarian and homogenous nation,  but on the contrary there are two nations in  the main, Hindus and Muslims, in India.” He refers to “centuries of a cultural, religious and national antagonism between the Hindus and the Moslems”. The title of the section in which the above statements are made is, ‘As it is there are two antagonistic nations living side by side in India.’ India is not a nation but it is the name of the state in which these two nations exist.

On August 15, 1947, two nation-states were born. One of them, Pakistan, could be said to conform to Savarkar’s definition of nation, but the one to which he belonged, India, was stubbornly refusing to fall in line. The biggest obstacle, it seemed, was the Mahatma himself. He had to be removed. With him alive, neither Hindu rashtra nor Akhand Bharat could become a reality.

There is consensus that it was an extreme wing of the Hindu Mahasabha led by Savarkar that was behind Gandhi’s murder

. In January 1948, when Gandhi was assassinated, Savarkar was arrested as the mastermind behind the conspiracy. He was eventually exonerated in the Gandhi murder trial for lack of evidence to corroborate the testimony of the approver, a technical point of criminal law. Sardar Patel, being a fine criminal lawyer, was personally convinced of Savarkar’s guilt, otherwise he would not have agreed to put him up for trial. He told Jawaharlal Nehru in unambiguous terms

:

“It was a fanatical wing of the Hindu Mahasabha directly under Savarkar that [hatched] the conspiracy and saw it through.”

When the Commission of Inquiry set up in 1965 under Justice Jiwan Lal Kapoor, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, gave its report, it came to the following conclusion

Film on Godse's Murder of Gandhi: Falsehoods Galore | Ram Puniyani

Film on Godse’s Killing of Gandhi: Falsehoods Galore

Ram Puniyani

The film has “Why I killed Gandhi” was recently released. It is an attempt to glorify Nathuram Godse the killer of Mahatma Gandhi. One of its clip, the one related to Godse’s Testimony in Punjab High court is doing rounds in the social media.

In the long clip Godse unabashedly falsifies the events and gives them a communal slant. It has already been popularized that Gandhi did nothing to save the life of revolutionary Bhagat Singh. This has been planted in the minds of large sections despite the farewell speech of Viceroy Lord Irwin. He corroborates Gandhi’s statements that he earnestly pleaded for commutation of the sentences. Irwin (26th March 1931) states, “…As I listened the other day to Mr. Gandhi putting the case for commutation forcibly before me, I reflected first of what significance it surely was that the apostle of non-violence should so earnestly be pleading the cause of the devotees of a creed so fundamentally opposite to his own, but I should regard it as wholly wrong to allow my judgment on these matters to be influenced or deflected by purely political considerations. I could imagine no case in which under the law penalty had been more directly deserved."

Now Godse in his deposition states that Gandhi was writing against revolutionaries and despite his opposition Congress convention passed the resolution praising the sacrifice and patriotism of Bhagat Singh. The truth is that the resolution praising Bhagat Singh was drafted by Gandhi himself, “This Congress, while dissociating itself from and disapproving of political violence in any shape or form, places on record its admiration of the bravery and sacrifice of the late Sardar Bhagat Singh and his comrades Sukhdev and Rajguru, and mourns with the bereaved families the loss of these lives. The Congress is of opinion that this triple execution is an act of wanton vengeance and is a deliberate flouting of the unanimous demand of the nation for commutation.”

In an attempt to create a binary between revolutionaries and Gandhi, Godse also forgets the attempts by Gandhi to get Savarkar Brothers released. In Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi Volume 20, pages 369-371 we can read an article in which he argues that Savarkar brothers should be released and be allowed to participate in the political life of the country in non violent way.

Now Godse in this clip pitches Gandhi against Bose. It is true that Gandhi and Bose had differed on many issues but both were committed to get Independence for India. Gandhi did oppose his President ship in 1939. Bose was arguing that we should ally with Germany and Japan to fight against British. Gandhi was arguing for struggle against British to get Independence. Most of the Central Committee of Congress was with Gandhi. Still Gandhi and Bose had highest respect for each other. Bose was happy to know about launch of Quit India movement. Bose also sought Bapu’s blessings for success of Azad Hind Fauz (AHF). As a mark of respect he coined “Father of the nation’ for Gandhi and also named a battalion in AHF as Gandhi battalion.

Gandhi’s respect for Bose was not diminished a bit, as he called him “Prince among Patriots”, and went to meet the AHF prisoners in jail.

As a part of the RSS-Hindu Mahasabha propaganda Godse accuses Gandhi as being pro Muslim- Anti Hindu and holds him responsible for partition of the country. We know the complex process of partition,  British policy of ‘divide and rule’ and this being assisted by Muslim and Hindu Communalists. Godse’s praise for Subhash Bose is like shedding Crocodile tears. When Bose was fighting against British, his party Hindu Mahasabha was actively aiding British by recruiting the people for British army. Godse’s paper Agrani carried a cartoon depicting Mahatma Gandhi as Ravan, one of the ten heads being Bose, being slayed by Savarkar. And if he was really convinced by revolutionaries’ path what stopped him to join AHF?

He accuses Gandhi of forcing the Government for giving 55 Crores to Pakistan. This 55 Crores belonged to the share of Pakistan from the joint treasury. And Gandhi did not go to fast for that, he opined that if we back out from such commitments, how the World will look at us?

Godse is scathing on Gandhi for putting one of the conditions in his fast being vacating the mosques and other properties of Muslims occupied by Hindus. As the tragedy of partition unfolded communal violence started gripping the nation and with the help of communal forces Hindus occupied the properties of Muslims, including mosques. Godse dares Gandhi to take similar steps against Pakistan and Muslims. He deliberately undermines the fact that one of the major steps taken by Gandhi at that time was to quell the riots in Noakhali, where Hindus were major victims. He had similar appeal for Pakistan. Gandhi believed that if the safety of the Muslims was assured in India, he would be able to go to Pakistan and do a great deal for Hindus-Sikhs there.

His emphasis for peace was a clear act of morality, “If we are able to accomplish this in Delhi I assure you that our way will become absolutely clear in Pakistan. And with that will commence a new life. When I go to Pakistan I will not let them off easily. I will die for the Hindus and Sikhs there.”

The lie of lies in this Court statement is that it was Godse alone who planned the murer. Initially Sardar Patel stated that Gandhi murder was a part of Hindu Mahsabha plot and later Jeevan Lal Kapoor Commission observed, "All these facts taken together were destructive of any theory other than the conspiracy to murder by Savarkar and his group."

The real motive of murdering Gandhi was that Gandhi was for inclusive Nationalism, the dream of revolutionaries; Bhagat Singh-Bose included; and for Gandhi’s attempts to work against untouchability and caste inequality. Godse’s Hindu nationalism was opposed to both. The falsehoods being dished out are a cover for his deeper agenda.

India: Don’t implicate Gandhi in Savarkar mercy petition. Archives don’t back the claim | Urvish Kothari - The Print, 16 October, 2021

Don’t implicate Gandhi in Savarkar mercy petition. Archives don’t back the claim

Gandhi’s efforts for the freedom of the Savarkar brothers were questioned when he did not sign the petition to release Savarkar from jail in 1937.

India: Did Gandhi ask Savarkar to File Mercy petitions? Ram Puniyani

Did Gandhi ask Savarkar to File Mercy petitions?

Ram Puniyani

To create and promote the icons of Hindu Nationalism lots is being done through propaganda which is operating at multiple levels. One recently witnessed on 2nd October that a massive twitter storm in favor of Godse was created with tweets like Nathuram Godse Amar rahen (Long Live Nathuram Godse). The other person, Nathuram’s Guru, Savarkar is much in news currently. An image of him is being created through various books, written in his praise, are being released with big fanfare. Savarkar was the one who in the initial periods of his life was an anti-British revolutionary who encouraged his followers to use arms against the British officers. That one can say was Savarkar 1.0. Savarkar 2.0 begins with his imprisonment in the Andman prison, the imprisonment there was known as Kala Pani to reflect the extremely adverse and wretched conditions of the jail life. Here he developed the ideology of Hindutva and Hindu Rashtra. It is during this period that he wrote several mercy petitions to get released from the jail.

So far his followers had been denying that he wrote any mercy petitions. With his biographies, which are primarily written to spruce up his image as a revolutionary and the chief ideologue of Hidnutva politics, his mercy petitions have become more known. So how to reconcile the image of a revolutionary with the one who has written the apologies times and over again. Here the Goebbelsian techniques are being put into service. One of the top leaders of BJP, Mr. Rajnath Singh, the defense minister at the release of Savarkar’s biography by Uday Mahurkar and Chirayu Pandit, “Veer Savarkar: The Man who could have prevented Partition”, made a statement which has no truth in it all.

Mr. Singh stated that “Lies were spread about Savarkar,…Time and again, it was said he filed mercy petitions before the British government. But the truth is that he did not file mercy petitions for his release [from jail]. A prisoner has the right to file mercy petitions. It was Mahatma Gandhi who asked him to file mercy petitions. He filed a mercy petition after Gandhi’s advice. Mahatma Gandhi had appealed that Savarkar ji should be released. He also warned that the act of demeaning his national contribution will not be tolerated.”

What is the truth? Savarkar was arrested on March 13, 1910. The charge was that he had sent the pistol to kill the Nasik District collector Jackson. It is true that the jail conditions were horrific. Writing a mercy petition is the right of prisoners. Mostly many prisoners do it on health ground or family ground or what have you. The claim that he wrote the petitions on formats, claimed by Rajnath and Company has no truth. In sum and substance, all his petitions are different and they pleaded for mercy on the ground that what he did was as a misguided youth. He has been given the just punishment, but now he should be released as he has realized his mistake and that he is willing to serve the British Government in whatever capacity they will like.

This is a more than bending on the knees. His mercy petitions, nearly seven begin from 1911 and go on till his release. The tone and tenor of most the letters on these lines; and they are available as an example of how much one can bend to get released. Many authors have quoted them extensively. Now the claim that it was Gandhi on whose insistence these were written is a pure lie. Savarkar began writing his petitions from 1911 itself. Gandhi that time was in South Africa to return to India only in 1915. Gandhi, as he gradually assumed the leadership of Congress, received a letter from Savarkars' brother Dr. Narayan Savarkar, for helping his brother released.

Gandhi in reply, on January 25, 1920, advised Narayan Savarkar to “frame a petition setting forth the facts of the case bringing out in clear relief the fact that the offence committed by your brother was purely political.” He also wrote that he is “moving in the matter” in his own way. The reply can also be found in Volume 19 of the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi. So should be clear that Gandhi is asking Savarkar’s younger brother to draft a petition, not writing to Vinayak Savarkar to write a mercy petition which he did! Gandhi knew the task is difficult so he does say it is difficult to advise you (Dr. Savarkar)

On his part Gandhi wrote an article which can be seen in collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi Volume 20, pages 369-371 in which he argues that Savarkar brothers should be released and be allowed to participate in the political life of the country in non violent way. He also appealed on similar lines for Bhagat Singh later. He had a broad and inclusive view of national movement due to which he undertook such endeavors.

If one sees the pattern of Gandhi, it is not possible to think that he will advise for mercy petition. In the same collected works referred above there is the case of Durgadas in which Gandhi states, "I hope therefore that the friends of Durgadas will not advise him or his wife to petition for mercy nor add to the wife’s unhappiness by commiserating with her. On the contrary, it is our duty to ask her to steel her heart and feel glad that her husband is in jail for no fault of his own. The truest service that we can render to Durgadas would be to offer Mrs. Durgadas such assistance, pecuniary or otherwise, as she may need..."

Now this falsehood is being deliberately concocted that it was on Gandhi’s advice that Savakar wrote those apologies. The contrast of the history is that Gandhi on one side asks for release of Savarkar, and same Savarkar is later one of the accused in Gandhi murder. As Sardar Patel wrote to Nehru, It was a fanatical wing of the Hindu Mahasabha directly under Savarkar that hatched the conspiracy...” Later Jeevanlal Kapoor Commission also came to similar conclusions.

It is also true that Savarkar later tried to work for temple entry of dalits; he also said that cow is not a sacred animal etc. but the central point of his life remained to help the British in all the ways. He deepened the foundations of Hindu nationalism, in contrast to the Indian Nationalism, which was struggling for India’s independence. In 1942 when Gandhi gave the call of Quit India Savarkar gave the instruction to all the Hindu Mahasabhaites to stick to their posts and continue to discharge their duties for British. He was the one to help British in getting recruits for their army.

Hindu nationalists today want to glorify Savarkar and interestingly they have to take the cover of Gandhi in whose murder the emerging Hindutva icons were involved. Rajnath Singh’s statement is an example of how blatantly lies are deployed by the likes of Rajnath Singh to gain credibility for the icons who serve their political goals.

Anand Patwardhan's 10 minute remembrance of Gandhi on assassination anniversary

73 years ago on this day (30 jan, 1948) they murdered Gandhiji. But his thoughts live on in the hearts of non-violent protesters at Shaheen Bagh and in the Black Lives Matter Movement in USA and in the farmers movement in India and in the hearts of all those who stand against injustice and violence, and yes as you can see below, even in Pakistan.

Hindi Article-Gandhi: Godse-Contrasting Nationalism

Gandhi and the Hindutva Right
From Nehru to Patel and Ambedkar, the saffron party has appropriated freedom-fighters or tarnished legacies. Gandhi, however, poses a different problem.

‘Death ends all enmity’ (Marnanti Vairani) goes a maxim in Hinduism.
The story also goes that when Ravana was on death bed, Ram had even asked Laxman to go to him and learn something which no other person except a great scholar like him could teach him, declaring that though he has been forced to punish him for his terrible crime, ‘you are no more my enemy’.
It is a different matter that Hindutva supremacists -- who are keen ‘to transform Hinduism from a variety of religious practices into a consolidated ethnic identity’ -- are believers in the exact opposite.
For them, once the enemy is dead, the enmity flares up without any limits. They have no qualms that their adversary is no more to defend himself/ herself.
It has been more than five and half years that they are in power at the Centre and we have been witness to complete vilification, demonisation and obfuscation of many of their adversaries, all great leaders of the anti-colonial struggle. Of course, few were found to be ‘lucky’ enough that were promptly co-opted/appropriated by them, of course, in a sanitised form.
Thus Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, who spent more than 11 years in British jail, and was a darling of the youth, and was chosen by Mahatma Gandhi as his successor, and without whose visionary role independence in India could never have been imagined, stands obfuscated and demonised.
Whereas the likes of Sardar Patel, BR Ambedkar and Gandhi are being co-opted and attempts are on surreptitiously and not so surreptitiously to package and present them as icons of the Hindutva movement itself. As an aside, one needs to mention here that it has been years that Gandhi and Ambedkar have been included in their list of ‘Pratahsmarniy’ (worth remembering in the morning).
Interestingly, there is a dual move vis-a-vis Mahatma Gandhi, the ‘greatest Hindu of his times’ -- where one is witness to his ongoing stigmatisation, and simultaneous co-option/appropriation.
One can recall how it started with reduction of the Mahatma as an icon of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (October 2014) -- and brushing aside his legacy of anti-colonial struggle, or the way Khadi Village Industries Commission, without any qualms, substituted Gandhi’s photo with that of Narendra Modi, who, according to a senior Minister in Haryana’s cabinet, had become a greater brand of Khadi than Gandhi. Or Gandhi’s killer, Nathuram Godse, the first terrorist of independent India, being called a ‘patriot’ on the floor of the House, or his increasing glorification in the country and plans to establish temples to Godse in different parts of the country. The stigmatisation even went to the extent of his assasination being ‘re-enacted’ in Aligarh by activists of a fringe Hindutva formation etc.
The latest in series happens to be utterings of the ‘motor mouth’ senior MP of BJP, Ananth Hegde.
Speaking at a public event in Bengaluru, Hegde described the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi as "drama" and said his "blood boiled" when he read history and "such people came to be called Mahatma".
Hegde,‘an admirer of Nathuram Godse’, even castigated the whole freedom movement and the freedom fighters, who had “asked the British how they should fight for freedom”. According to him the independence movement was “adjustment, understanding, 20-20 (cricket)”. “Those who never saw a lathi nor received a blow from a lathi are today described as freedom fighters in the pages of history,”
As expected, the outrageous statements made by Hegde, who was even a cabinet minister in the last Modi cabinet, received widespread condemnation. There were calls to take action against him. One also learnt that formally the BJP leadership was said to be uncomfortable with Hegde’s remarks, which has still failed to take any action against Pragya Thakur who had glorified Gandhi’s assassin many a time, and it has supposedly issued a notice to him to explain his remarks.
What is worth underlining is that despite the gravity of the remarks which can be construed as creating disaffection between communities, latest reports mention ‘no sedition case — the preferred weapon these days — had been slapped against Hegde’
Would it be correct to say that Hedge’s remarks were just a slip of the tongue or were deliberately made to provoke controversy to deflect attention from the government’s immediate troubles? Looking at his seniority in the party and his many outrageous statements earlier, which have even led to cases being filed against him earlier, it would be difficult to believe that they were inadvertent or so.
Remember, there is nothing surprising as far as statements by Hegde are concerned, which not only denigrate Mahatma Gandhi but also the great freedom struggle. They resonate with the essential concealed disdain towards the anti-colonial struggle of the Indian people which, according to them, brought to power ‘pseudo-seculars’ and their allies and did great harm to the cause of a Hindu nation. Instances galore show how its’ founders ridiculed the martyrs and made fun of people’s struggle.
This is Hedgewar, the founder member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Patriotism is not only going to prison. It is not correct to be carried away by such superficial patriotism.(CP Bhishikar, Sanghavariksh Ke Beej: Dr. Keshavrao Hedgewar, Suruchi, 1994, p. 21.
Here is a quote from Golwalkar, the second supremo of RSS about martyrs:
There is no doubt that such men who embrace martyrdom are great heroes and their philosophy too is pre-eminently manly. They are far above the average men who meekly submit to fate and remain in fear and inaction. All the same, such persons are not held up as ideals in our society. We have not looked upon their martyrdom as the highest point of greatness to which men should aspire. For, after all, they failed in achieving their ideal, and failure implies some fatal flaw in them. (M.S. Golwalkar, Bunch of Thoughts, Sahitya Sindhu, Bangalore, 1996, p. 283)
Third, any student of the independence struggle knows that it is a ‘weak point’ as far as Hindutva formations in general, or RSS in particular, are concerned. Much has been written on the fact that not only did RSS not participate in that struggle and focussed itself on ‘organising Hindus’, but that it even deterred its own activists from joining it.
Interestingly, there is a strong commonality between Hindu communalists as well as Muslim communalists. Neither the Hindu communalists, led by the likes of Savarkar and Golwalkar nor the Muslim communalists, led by the likes of Jinnah, participated in ‘Quit India’ movement. Their support to the British rule also becomes evident when one witnesses that it was the same period when Hindu Mahasabha was running coalition governments in Bengal and parts of today’s Pakistan with Muslim league.
Coming back to the denigration of Gandhi, a key question arises why the Sangh Parivar and its affiliated organisations cannot stop this double move vis-a-vis Gandhi, where they want to appropriate him, co-opt him as well as vilify/demonise him simultaneously.
One can recall an interesting analysis by an educator with background in positive psychology and psychometrics when Hindu Mahasabha activists were arrested along with their leader, Puja Shakuni Pandey, for enacting the scene of Gandhi’s assassination in front of cameras and sharing it online. The video of the said incident went viral where Puja Pandey, called ‘Lady Godse’ by her followers, was found shooting at Gandhi's effigy and celebrating his assassination.
Rohit Kumar had asked:
This is Hindutva’s heyday. The RSS reigns supreme. Gandhi has officially been co-opted and reduced to a pair of glasses and a broom, so why so much hatred for a man who is dead, and for all practical purposes gone from the body politic?
Or has he?
It looks like hate, but could it actually be fear?
Explaining the nuances of behavioural psychology which describe hatred and fear to be two sides of the same coin, he had further asked:
Could it be that the spirit of the Mahatma is alive and well, walking the streets and alleys of India? Satya and ahimsa, as we know, were the ‘weapons’ with which he waged his ‘war’. Is it possible that over the past five years, every time the Hindutva organisations and leaders have seen those two most powerful of all ‘weapons’ in action, they have also seen the spectre of Gandhi?
Looking back, one can see merit in his argument.
How does one explain the Modi-Shah regime, one which looked triumphant till just the other day, being put on the defensive suddenly? The victory of 2019 -- with more number of seats and an increased percentage of votes -- followed by the triumphalism associated with triple talaq move, followed by the overnight dissolution of a state from the map of India, throwing to the bins the agreement reached with the Kashmiri people decades ago and the Ayodhya judgement, everything looks remote now.
Why it is that millions of Indians -- young and old from different sections, regions and strata of society -- suddenly rose up to defend the Constitution, rejecting the anti-constitutional move to make religion a criteria of citizenship. Why it is that the Preamble of the Constitution, which was drafted when Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister of India, a man which the saffrons have demonised umpteen times, could suddenly become a rallying point of this upsurge of the masses? Why is that Shaheen Bagh --the historic protest by women discriminated since centuries on the basis of religion and gender - has emerged as a new symbol of non-violent resistance, and is inspiring similar such protests the country over?

India: On Death Anniversary, 10 Savarkar Links To Mahatma Gandhi's Assassination | Sudheendra Kulkarni

On Death Anniversary, 10 Savarkar Links To Mahatma's Killing
(January 30, 2020)

Will Narendra Modi's government posthumously honour Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966) with the Bharat Ratna? Most likely, even though his name did not figure in the Padma awards announced on the eve of Republic Day. After all, the BJP, which has evolved into a Savarkarite party - the Hindu Mahasabha in its new avatar - is insistent that its greatest, albeit highly controversial, Hindutva icon be recognised as a "Jewel of India" [ . . .  ]

India: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Mahatma Gandhi | Irfan Engineer

Mainstream Weekly, 27 April 2019

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Mahatma

by Irfan Engineer

Manmohan Vaidya, the Joint General Secretary of the RSS, puts in a herculean effort through his article — “The Mahatma and the Sangh” (The Indian Express — April 12, 2019) to seek wider social legitimacy for the RSS misusing Mahatma Gandhi’s name. Vaidya tries to make out a case that though there were differences between the Sangh and the Mahatma, the Sangh has kept Mahatma’s ideals alive “through its work on rural development, organic farming, cow conservation and protection, social equality and harmony, imparting education in one’s own language and swadeshi economy and lifestyle”. He then attempts to make out a case that the Mahatma recognised the Sangh’s work, particularly as members of the untouchable community were also admitted in the Sangh. Finally, he seeks wider legitimacy on the ground that the Mahatma approvingly mentioned the name of the second Sarsanghchalak of the RSS—M. S. Golwalkar—in his prayer meeting in Delhi in the year 1947.
To make his points, Vaidya extensively quotes from Golwakar’s speech published in his Manual word wrap
Collected Works
. In one of his speeches Golwalkar claims that the Mahatma took his (Golwalkar’s) name during his prayer meeting in 1947 for which he considers himself fortunate. Golwalkar had last met Gandhiji in 1947, when Delhi was experiencing riots. Golwalkar claimed in his speech, “Even those who were non-violent by tradition had become cruel, rogue and heartless.” Golwalkar’s explanation to the Mahatma as to what was happening is interesting. Golwalkar told the Mahatma: “This is our misfortune. British used to say when we leave; you people will slit each other’s throat... It is bringing disrepute to us in the whole world.”
Rajmohan Gandhi, in his counter (‘What Gandhi Really Said’), gives the Matama’s account of the incident, which is quite different. Rajmohan Gandhi reports with references that the Mahatma wanted Golwalkar to give a public appeal that the RSS did not stand for the killing of Muslims. Golwalkar did not want to do so and asked the Mahatma to speak on his behalf. R. Gandhi writes that the Mahatma believed that the hands of the RSS were steeped in blood.
In his attempt to shake off the image that no one from the Sangh participated in the freedom struggle, Vaidya recalls that K.B. Hedgewar, the first Sarsanghchalak of the RSS, participated in the non-cooperation movement in 1921 and civil disobedience movement in 1930 for which he served two prison sentences. The RSS was formed in 1925 and so in 1921, Hedgewar could not have participated in the movement from the RSS. In order to participate in the civil disobedience movement in 1930, Vaidya omits to inform us that Hedgewar first resigned from the RSS.
Mahatma’s Hinduism vs. Hindutva Political Ideology
Vaidya is less than honest as he tries to misappropriate the Mahatma’s legacy to seek legitimacy for the Sangh. To compare Gandhiji’s inclusive Hinduism with Hindutva, which is a communitarian, authoritarian and exclusivist political ideology, is to compare chalk with cheese. Gandhiji would never have in any way legitimised the Sangh’s political ideology. The foundation of the Sangh’s ideology—Hindutva — is a vilification of what they describe as ‘foreign religions’, mainly, Islam and Christianity. The Hindutva ideology is in essence an adaptation of racist ideology of the Nazis and giving it a “Hindu” colour by invoking certain selective traditions prevalent in India, particularly from Manusmriti. Golwalkar approved, rather praised, the genocide and inhuman massacre of Jews undertaken by Hitler as measure “to keep up the purity of the Race and its culture”. He termed Nazism as “race pride at its highest”, and wanted “Hindusthan to learn and profit by” it. (Golwalkar, 1939, pp. 87-88) In contrast, the Mahatma’s Hinduism stood for non-violence as a creed and even transcended nationalism, placing its faith in vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the entire world is one family).
Golwalkar in his essay, We or Our Nationhood Defined (1939), propounds what is nationalism, defines its enemies and finally, lays out the road map to achieve it—all three extensively quoting Western political scientists in support. In doing so, he is charting a path opposed to the one that the people of India chose in the course of the freedom struggle under the leadership of the Indian National Congress. To him, joining hands with Muslims, whom he describes as “old invaders and foes” of Hindus, isn’t being national nor is it fighting for freedom. To call the platform where Hindus and Muslims joined hands for freedom as a “national” platform is “outlandish”. What would be achieved through such a platform through non-violence would not be “freedom”. These, according to him, were “wrong notions of democracy”. Golwalkar’s path is that of war “at once with the Moslems on the one hand and Britain on the other”. (1939, p. 56)
Golwalkar’s concept of nationalism was incomplete with merely geographical territory which was widely accepted by the freedom movement. The freedom movement led by the Congress had accepted that India was a nation in the making and all those who lived within the territory of India shared its common history and culture were Indian nationals even though they followed diverse religions, spoke diverse languages and followed diverse traditions and customs. The freedom movement gave the slogan of ‘unity in diversity’ and the unity rested in the common history and common struggle for independence and on mutual respect for each other’s religion, culture, language, customs and traditions. The diversity did pose some challenge but the challenge had to be overcome. For Golwalkar, nationalism has five essential factors fused into one indissoluble whole. The five factors were — geographical territory or country, race, religion, culture and language. (1939, p. 61)
The Hindu national, as opposed to the Indian national, had to belong to one religion, one culture, one language and one race. Those who did not belong to the Hindu ‘race’, ‘culture’, ‘language’ and religion, were therefore not Hindu nationals. Golwalkar writes: “Our Race-spirit is a child of our Religion and [al]so with us[,] Culture is but a product of our all comprehensive Religion, a part of its body and not distinguishable from it.” (1939, p. 67) Therefore, freedom for Golwalkar and the Hindu nationalists did not mean independence from British rule and recognition of liberties of individuals. “Freedom” for Golwalkar meant pursuit of perpetuation of the Hindu race-spirit, religion, language and culture and enforcement of these factors on all individuals. This would entail a war with Muslims (and by implication, with Christians as well and all those who, according to them, do not belong to the Hindu race/nation).
It is this war with Muslims and Christians which is continuing through communal violence in Gujarat, Kandhamal, and several other big and small riots, attacks on prayer meetings of Christians, several instances of mob lynching, partisan response of the state to communal violence and lynching. Discrimination of minorities and attack on their cultural symbols, be it demolition of the Babri Masjid, changing names of places that represent or remind of the Mughal past, demand to disenfranchise the Muslims are all steps in the war.
Religion for Golwalkar is much more than just a relation between the individual and her creator. Religion encompasses, controls and determines every aspect of individual behaviour, actions and thoughts. Religion, culture and race-spirit are all fused into one. An individual simply submits to the race-spirit. Golwalkar writes: “Guided by this Religion in all walks of life, individual, social, political, the Race evolved a Culture, which despite the degenerating contact with the debased “civilizations” of the Mussalmans and the Europeans, for the last ten centuries, is still the noblest in the world.” (1939, p. 95) The Indian nationals belonging to other religions, whom he calls foreign elements, have the only one of the two option — “either to merge themselves in the national race and adopt its culture, or to live at its mercy so long as the national race may allow them to do so and to quit the country at the sweet will of the national race. That is the only sound view on the minorities problem.” (1939, p. 104)
To conclude, One of the most revered figures of the Sangh—Golwalkar—who is always referred with suffix “Guruji” (leader, teacher, ideologue and philosopher) lays down that members belonging to the Hindu race/nation have to submit/conform to the race-spirit and non-Hindu foreign elements have to adopt or merge in the national (Hindu) race or live at the sweet will and mercy of the national race and expect no rights or privileges. The national race would be at war with the foreign elements and would learn from how Germany under Hitler treated their minorities (Jews during holocaust). Democracy is not a suitable political arrangement as it is Western in its origin, but more importantly, recognises equal rights of all citizens, irrespective of their religion, gender, race, culture, caste, language, or place of birth. It recognises the fundamental rights of all citizens, right to life and that all individuals are born with the fundamental rights which are inalienable. The laws of the Hindu race were written by their ancestors, more particularly in Manusmriti and that needed to be enforced by the state.
Gandhiji’s Approach
The Mahatma’s approach is radically different. His idea of swaraj was incomplete without Hindu-Muslim unity and removal of untouchability. “Swaraj for India must be an impossible dream without an indissoluble union between the Hindus and the Muslims of India... It cannot be based upon mutual fear. It tmust be a partnership between equals...” (Young India: October 6, 1920) Religion itself for Gandhiji was neither fused with culture nor defining race or nationality, nor something that was to be enforced. Swaraj was freedom for everyone, “the smallest among us, to do as he likes without any physical interference with his liberty...” He wrote: “Christians and Jews in India are not foreigners, nor are Parsis. We must go out of our way to be friendly to them and to serve and help them above all, to protect them from harm from ourselves.” (Young India: November 24, 1921)
Gandhiji put the burden on Hindus to disprove through their conduct that they and Muslims are two nations. (Harijan: August 3, 1947) Quite contrary to Golwalkar and Sangh’s ideology, according to Gandhiji, “Hindustan belongs to all those who are born and bred here... Therefore, it belongs to Parsis, Beni-Israels, to Indian Christians, Muslims and other non-Hindus as much as to Hindus. Free India will be no Hindu Raj, it will be Indian Raj based not on the majority of any religious sect or community, but on the representatives of the whole people without distinction of religion... Religion is a personal matter which should have no place in politics.” (Harijan: September 8, 1946).
For Gandhiji, religion was not a source of law but source of morals. The soul of all religion is one, but is encased in a multitude of forms (Young India: September 18, 1924) Hindus and Muslims lived in peace among themselves during the Muslim rule (Young India: February 26, 1925) He regarded Islam to be a religion of peace in the same sense as Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism were (Young India: January 20, 1927).
From the above, it must be clear that the two approaches were completely different as chalk and cheese are. Either Vaidya is dishonest to give an impression that Gandhiji appreciated and respected the Sangh or Gandhiji was fool-hardy to believe in non-violence as a creed and religion as a source of moral behaviour, serving the poorest and most marginalised and at the same time appreciate the Sangh. The former seems to us to be a more appropriate conclusion. For Gandhiji, pursuit of truth was pursuit of God and all religions were true.
Vaidya uses Gandhiji and Gandhiji’s popular appeal with the people of India even today to dishonestly seek legitimacy for the Sangh. Does the Sangh feel so insecure? One needs a lot of moral courage to be on the righteous path and to carry on the Mahatma’s legacy. The Sangh may have patronage of the powers that be, but it has not inherited the Mahatma’s legacy.

India: Gandhi and RSS - Diverse Nationalisms | Ram Puniyani

Gandhi and RSS: Diverse Nationalisms
Ram Puniyani
There are continuous attempts from RSS camp to show that Mahatma Gandhi looked up to RSS with respect. The latest in this direction is the piece by RSS joint General Secretary Shri Man Mohan Vaidya. (The Mahatma and the Sangh, IE, 12 April 2019). Vaidya first tries to dissociate from Godse by stating that in the many discussions which he has attended on Gandhi within Sangh, Godse is not mentioned. Does that mean Godse had nothing to do with RSS? He was a Pracharak of RSS who later joined Hindu Mahasabha as its Secretary of Pune Branch. His brother Gopal Godse, Nathuram’s younger sibling and a co-conspirator in the assassination plot, in 1994, disclosed that his elder brother was anxious to protect the RSS, which had been "like a family to us". "[Nathuram] said in his statement that he left the RSS", Gopal continued. "He said it because... the RSS were in a lot of trouble after the murder of Gandhi. But he did not leave the RSS". Gopal denounced the "cowardice" of those disputing his brother's unbroken membership of the RSS. Corroborating Gopal's statement is the influential pro-RSS scholar Dr Koenrad Elst who, in his 2001 book Gandhi and Godse, wrote that "Nathuram contrived to create the impression that the RSS had little to do with him, simply to avoid creating more trouble for the RSS in the difficult post-assassination months."
Right in the beginning of the article Mr. Vaidya is forthright to point out his opposition to Gandhi, “…despite disagreeing with him and his surrender to the extremist and jihadi elements among Muslim community RSS had admired… (Gandhi)” This distortion of history is deliberate in keeping with Hindu nationalism espoused by Vaidya and his RSS. While from within Muslims there were Muslim Nationalists, whom Gandhi abhorred, he wooed over large section of Muslims to Indian Nationalism. To call the Muslims who participated in freedom movement under the leadership of Gandhi extremist or jihadi is not only a travesty of truth; it is more a revelation of RSS worldview where Muslim is seen as alien, foreigner, aggressor and terrorist. It is this root of RSS ideology which prompted Godse to put three bullets in the chest of Mahatma.
Viadya does try to present as if RSS was part of freedom movement, by showing that RSS founder Dr. K. B. Hedgewar participated in 1921 non cooperation and 1930 civil disobedience movement.  On one side Hedgewar participated in Non cooperation movement on the other he is critical of the impact of the same,  ‘As a result of non cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi, the enthusiasm in the country was cooling down and the evils of social life, which that movement generated, were menacingly raising their head. ‘As per him ‘it is due to this movement that Brahmin–non Brahmin conflict was nakedly on view’. (C.P.Bhishikar in Keshav Sangh Nirmata, Pune 1979, p 7) Surely these participations by the RSS founder were purely in personal capacity and RSS never participated in any anti British movement as an organization. In 1930, (RSS was formed in 1925) Hedgewar discouraged those who wanted to participate in anti British Movement. And in 1942, his successor also forbade RSS volunteers to take part in 1942 Quit India movement. Golwalkar reminded the RSS that fighting against British is not a part of their agenda. This RSS ideologue clearly spells out that fighting against the British has not been part of their agenda, “We should remember that in our pledge we have talked of freedom of the country through defending religion and culture, there is no mention of departure of British from here.” (taken from Shri Guruji Samagra Darshan, vol. IV, page 40)
As far as Gandhi’s views on RSS are concerned there are some scattered observations, but these give an apt understanding of what he thought of about RSS. As far as Gandhi’s understandings about RSS is concerned there are authentic sources to tell us the real story. In Harijan on 9th August 1942, Gandhi writes, “I had heard of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its activities; and also know that it was a communal organization”, this was in response to the slogans and some speech against ‘other’ community, about which a complaint was made. In this Gandhi is referring to the drill of RSS volunteers, who shouted that this Nation belongs to Hindus alone and once the British leave we will subjugate the non Hindus. In response to the rowdyism indulged by communal organizations he writes, “I hear many things about RSS. I have heard it said the Sangh is at the root of all this mischief.”(Gandhi, xcviii, 320-322)
Amongst the recorded opinions about Gandhi’s evaluation of RSS, the most authentic is the one of his secretary Pyarelal. Pyarelal narrates an event in the wake of 1946 riots. A member of Gandhi’s entourage had praised the efficiency, discipline, courage and capacity for hard work shown by RSS cadres at Wagah, a major transit camp for Punjab refugees. Gandhi quipped back, ‘but don’t forget, even so had Hitler’s Nazis and Fascists under Mussolini’ Gandhi characterized RSS as a communal body with a totalitarian outlook’ (Pyarelal, Mahatma Gandhi: The Last Phase, Ahmadabad, page 440)
After independence, in the context of Delhi violence (Rajmohan Gandhi, Mohandas, page 642), Gandhi confronted the RSS chief Golwalkar, with reports of the RSS hand in Delhi violence, Denying the allegations Golwalkar also said that RSS did not stand for killing the Muslims. Gandhi asked him to say so publically. Golwalkar said Gandhi could quote him on this. Gandhi did this in his prayer talk that evening, but he told Golwalkar that statement ought to come from him. Later he told Nehru that he did not find Golwalkar convincing.’
So today when point is being made about choice between Gandhi and Godse, what is being pleaded is that the choice is between inclusive Indian nationalism of Gandhi and exclusive Hindu nationalism being propounded by RSS progeny BJP, Godse is synonym of Hindu nationalism, the agenda of RSS Combine!
