After stoking controversy with its demand that Muslims be stripped of their voting rights, Shiv Sena today advocated compulsory family planning for Muslims and Christians to check their "rising" population.

"By only increasing the population, one can try and convert the country into Pakistan, but cannot give quality and healthy life to one's family," the BJP ally in Maharashtra said in an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana.

Sena backed the views of vice president of All India Hindu Mahasabha Sadhvi Deva Thakur on the issue though it did say that her choice of words may have been wrong.

"Sadhvi Deva says that the increasing population of Muslims and Christians is dangerous for the country and they should be, therefore, forcibly sterilised. She should have used the word family planning instead sterilisation," it said

Thakur had on Saturday said Muslims and Christians must undergo sterilisation to restrict their growing population which was posing a threat to Hindus.

"The population of Muslims and Christians is growing day by day. To rein in this, Centre will have to impose emergency, and Muslims and Christians will have to be forced to undergo sterilisation so that they can't increase their numbers," Sadhvi had said.

Sena today said, "Sadhvi is not as educated as the Owaisi brothers (of AIMIM), thus may have chosen wrong words to convey her message. One can ignore her sterilisation words, but the fact is, their (Muslim, Christian) population and family planning remains a problem."

Sena said if All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi is truly concerned about the community, he should support the call for family planning and the cease of burqa-wearing tradition for Muslim women.

"Family planning will ensure that one can look after his family properly and provide quality education to children," it said.

The saffron party said by advocating sterilisation of Muslims, it wants 'quality living' for them.

"When we say Muslims should undergo sterilisation, our intention is that they should live happily," Sena said.

Sena had earlier courted controversy by demanding scrapping of voting rights of Muslims, saying the community has often been used for vote bank politics, evoking sharp reactions from several political parties which accused it of trying to inflame passions and divide people.

The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Shiv Sena, an alliance partner of NDA government, would offer Rs 21,000 in cash to each Hindu family having 10 or more children. This, the Shiv Sena said, is an effort to counter the “growing influence of other communities”.

Shiv Sena’s state president Anil Singh told The Sunday Express that the district units have been directed to identify such families.

The party would hold a programme in November-end to reward these families along with a certificate with the message: “Rashtra hit me Hinduon ki jansankhya badhane ke liye (For increasing population of Hindus in the interest of the nation).”

The party would also launch an agitation from November 1 against family planning by Hindus. Party workers will lock government medical health centres across the state as part of the agitation.

Singh alleged only Hindus were going for vasectomies and tubectomies while other communities were avoiding it to increase their population. “We will appeal to Hindus that increasing our population is the need of the hour. If we do not, Hindus will become negligible in the country.”

He added government medical centres will be locked for a few hours in various districts on different days from November 1 onwards while another date would be decided to hold such protests across the state on a particular day. Sena workers had staged one such protest at a primary health centre in Meerut last week, he claimed.

He said the party had held a similar programme 7 years ago in Lucknow when Hindu couples with 10 or more children were awarded Rs 11,000. Around 120 families were awarded then.

RSS to Hindus: shun family planning, have more kids

For the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), it’s the more the merrier.

On the lines of the Catholic church’s campaign to have more children and win rewards, the RSS has advised Hindus to go for bigger families and not to limit their number of children. Concerned over the dwindling size of Hindu families, it has asked community members not to follow family planning norms blindly and create small families.

The Sangh feels that big families will help check the menacing demographic changes taking place in many parts of the country. The one-child norm practiced by most Hindu families will endanger the very existence of the community, it warned.

“According to the 2011 Census, growth rate of children in the age group of 0-6 is 15% among Hindus, whereas it is 18% among Muslims. Small family norms are posing a big threat to Hindus. So each family should have three children,” RSS joint secretary Dattareya Hosbal said on the sidelines of the RSS national executive meet, which concluded in Kochi on Sunday.

Two years ago, a worried Catholic Church in Kerala had announced a mega-plan -- ‘Jeeva Samrudhi’ -- to encourage families with more than three children. It even coined the slogan of ‘big family, happy family’ and decided to bear educational and other expenses of families who have more than three children.

According to the latest Census report, Christian population has come down to 18.75% from the earlier 22% in the state, forcing the church to press the panic button.

“Blindly following family planning norms by a community won’t do any good to the country. It will trigger serious imbalance in the country,” Hosbal said, adding that the Sangh will go all out to encourage big families.

The three-day executive, which concluded in Kochi on Sunday, also supported the Madhav Gadgil Committee report on the Western Ghats.

“The flawed development model and lavish lifestyle of some are causing immense damage to the environment.

In this context, the Madhav Gadgil Committee report is a landmark. His recommendations are in the larger interest of the nation,” RSS general secretary Suresh Joshi said, demanding a national debate on both (Gadgil and Kasturi Rangan) panels on Western Ghats.

He also criticised the proposed Communal and Targeted Violence Bill which will be introduced in the winter session of parliament. “It is highly biased and unlawful. It seeks to divide society on minority-majority lines, which is unconstitutional.

It will destroy communal harmony and cause immense damage to the social fabric. Instead of preventing communal violence, it will only lead to further division on communal lines,” he said, asking the UPA government to have a second thought on it.

Ayodhya, October 21 : The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has decided to launch a campaign against family planning and will use a book to urge Hindus to ensure that they produce at least four male children —”two for the family and two for the Hindu cause”.

To spread its new strategy among the Hindu masses, the VHP will circulate a book Bharat mein Hindu Bahumat (Hindu majority in India). About 10,000 copies of this book have been collected in Karsewak Puram, the local headquarters of VHP here, said Rama Patnaik, a VHP full-timer.

However, senior VHP leaders are not ready to disclose much on the issue. “It is a good move by the VHP, as the family planning system introduced in India by the Congress is anti-religious,” said Mahant Ram Kripal. “Our religious books do not give permission to control births,” he added.

Publised by an Ahmedabad-based publisher, the 100-page book says that at the given rate, the population of Muslims and Christians will outnumber that of Hindus in half a century. The book asks Hindus to ensure the birth of at least four male children and prepare two of them for the cause of Hindutva. It also directs parents to teach girls to prepare themselves for this. The book claims family planning is a “Christian and Muslim strategy to make Hindus a minority in India”. In the present circumstances it will be an anti-national act by the Hindus to adopt family planning system, says the book.

Ramanand Maheshwari, a VHP leader and member of the team that will circulate the book, said: “Within a few days we will take the book to the Hindu masses. We will also give it publicity through meetings, street plays and processions.”
