Go back to the basics - this seems to be the message that the RSS and the VHP gave the BJP leadership during their joint meeting on Thursday.

The brainstorming session, which took place at the RSS office in Jhandewalan, was attended by BJP chief Rajnath Singh and leaders L.K. Advani and Sushma Swaraj, RSS sarkaryavah Suresh 'Bhaiyyaji' Joshi and sahsarkaryavahs Dattatreya Hosabale and Suresh Soni, and VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Pravin Togadia.

The primary purpose of the meeting, according to a BJP leader, was to "iron out the creases in the BJP's relationship with the RSS and the VHP" - aimed at working out a better mechanism to coordinate between the ideological and political wing of the Sangh parivar.

After the meet, Rajnath said there are no differences between the BJP and the RSS and the VHP. He also stated that the BJP's PM candidate was not discussed.

VHP international working president Togadia, a known baiter of Narendra Modi, said the Gujarat CM was not even mentioned during the meeting.

The RSS and the VHP are said to have communicated to the BJP that it needs to go back to its Hindutva roots, which includes reviving the Ram Mandir issue.

The three entities are said to have evolved a strategy to keep the heat on the UPA over Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde's statement on Saffron terror. The VHP is planning to enlist the support of sadhus to mobilise the public.
