First they threw stones at the car in which Kanhaiya Kumar, president of JNU students union, was travelling from Nagpur airport to the city today to address a public meeting at the Dhanwate Hall on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Next, at the jam packed hall, some shoes and slippers were hurled and a few even tried to jump on to the dais in an unsuccessful bid to disrupt the meeting.
But Kumar was unfazed. Mocking the hooligans who called him a “traitor”, he asked if their conduct accorded with Hindutva’s idea of “patriotism”. “Nagpur is Babasaheb Ambedkar’s land, not Golwalkar’s [ideologue-in-chief of the RSS},” said Kumar. “Sangh headquarters is not Parliament and Manu Smruti is not the Constitution,” he added.
It may be recalled that on October 14, 1956, Dr. Ambedkar had converted to Buddhism along with over 3 lakh of his followers at a mammoth rally in Nagpur protesting against the inequities and indignities of the caste system.
"The atmosphere at the meeting was electric", Sharad Dudhat an activist from Nagpur told SabrangIndia. "The Dhanwate Hall was jam-packed and there were nothing less than 1,500-2,000 people outside the hall which accomodates around 1,200 persons, The best part is that an overwhelming majority of those assembled were students and young people.I can't remember when I last attended a meeting as exciting as today's in Nagpur". Kumar who spoke for about 45 minutes was greeted with thunderous applause time and again as he spoke about his idea of Azaadi, said Dudhat.
According to news reports five persons have been detained by the police.

A plan to have the "Hanuman Chalisa" recited at an AIDS-awareness program in Nagpur tomorrow provoked this response from the Bombay High Court: "Is India for Hindus only?"
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation had organized the event in association with a local temple trust. "Why only recital of Hanuman Chalisa and why not from the Quran, the Bible or other religious literature? What is the nexus of AIDS awareness and Hanuman Chalisa recital? Is it only Hindus who contract AIDS?" the judges asked.
The municipal corporation in Nagpur is run by the BJP. The agency has agreed to delink the two events by keeping at least an hour between the AIDS awareness programme and the Hanuman Chalisa recitation, which over 1.5 lakh people are expected to attend.
The judges based in Nagpur said that they are not against any religious programme, but are concerned about government agencies associating with these.
The court further directed to ensure that separate banners are put up backstage during both the programmes, with the individual names of organisers.
The corporation was also asked to give wide publicity to its AIDS awareness programme, without mentioning the Hanuman Chalisa event.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh cadres, who were credited with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s resounding victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, are losing faith in the central government. Troubled by the recent controversies involving union ministers and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seeming “failure” to fulfil “most” of the campaign promises, they’ve been lately venting their frustration to the RSS brass in letters.
In the last three months, a sizeable number of RSS pracharaks and swayamsevaks have sent complaints against the government to the RSS’ Nagpur headquarters. “We have received several thousand letters in the last three months,” said a senior RSS office-bearer based in Nagpur. “They are written by our pracharaks and swayamsevaks in different parts of the country. Most of these contain complaints with regard to the functioning of the government of Modiji.”
Pracharaks are RSS full-timers who take the vow of celibacy and dedicate themselves to the organisation, while swayamsevaks are the volunteer members who act under the supervision of local-level pracharaks. It is believed that the BJP’s victory in the 2014 elections owed a lot to the groundwork done by these pracharaks and swayamsevaks, who were galvanised by the prospect of getting a former pracharak as prime minister.
That excitement is dissipating, if the recent letters addressed to RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat are anything to go by.
Corrective measures
“Most of the promises we made [during the Lok Sabha elections] have remained unfulfilled,” said a letter sent by a pracharak in Gujarat that was read out by the RSS office-bearer. “The failure of the Modi government has caused us much personal frustration.”
According to the office-bearer, another letter, written by a pracharak in West Bengal, asked: “Would it be possible for the Sangh to take corrective steps, either by giving him [Modi] a proper roadmap [of governance] or by forcing him to introduce major decentralisation of power at the level of ministers so that those who have faith in the Sangh can work independent of him?” The letter added: “As of now, the Sangh’s image has also started getting tarnished along with the image of Modiji.”
More alarming for the BJP was a letter written by a pracharak in Bihar. “I fear that Modiji may not have similar appeal in Bihar as in 2014 [Lok Sabha elections],” it said, according to the RSS office-bearer. “He will have to do rapid course correction to convince the people of Bihar [at the time of the upcoming Assembly polls] that he is not a hawabaaz [bluffer].” Hawabaaz was the word used by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for Modi after the elections results in Delhi in February showed the BJP headed towards a disastrous defeat.
According to the RSS office-bearer, most of the complaints have come from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh.

Nagpur the city with RSS headquarters sees no problem in glorification of Hitler

NAGPUR: 'Hitler's Den', a pool parlour in Byramji Town, is ruffling feathers due to its name. The commercial establishment's sign board is replete with Nazi insignia, while the Black swastika in the white background is encircled in red with golden coloured eagles prominent in the logo. The only difference is that the swastika is not tilted as in the Nazi emblem. Given the atrocities committed by Adolf Hitler, the use of the repulsive symbol has not gone down well with many. Officials at the embassy of Israel were shocked to hear of the parlour in Nagpur.
In an email to TOI, spokesman for the Israel embassy David Golfarb said, "We can only assume that the owners of this new establishment are unaware of the horrendous meaning of the usage of Nazi themes and insignia for commercial gain. We are convinced that once they are apprised of the significance of the Nazi massacre of six million innocent Jews and many others throughout Europe during World War II, they will immediately change the name and remove all symbolism related to this atrocious regime."
In Navi Mumbai, a restaurant named 'Hitler's Cross' had opened up four years ago. After objections were raised, its owner Satish Sabhlok decided to change the name.
However, the owners of Nagpur-based Hitler's Den are in no mood to relent. Speaking to TOI, owner Baljeet Ghosal, said "There is no way we will change the name. We have been operating under this name since 2006 and now opened another one in Laxmi Nagar under the same banner. It is our identity."
When asked why he chose such a controversial name, Ghosal replied, "I just wanted a different sounding name. Someone suggested 'Hitler' and I promptly agreed. Plus whatever you are saying about his atrocities on Jews, who in Nagpur knows all this? No one has raised any objection yet."
When informed that the Israel embassy had taken objection, Ghosal said he understood their sentiments but will not agree to their demand. Noted Pune-based history author Santosh Shintre said, "It's shocking to hear about this shop in Nagpur. Hitler is not just a name, but a thought, a philosophy which has had horrible effect on human and world history. Plus what has Hitler got to do with snooker? There's no justification for the name. I have seen a pub in Paris which is named after Gandhi! (La Mahatma)".
Shintre also added that crimes against humanity have been committed against other communities as well, but the media has failed to highlight it. He says in the west, Holocaust has got sustained media exposure as compared to other incidents.
Well known sociologist, and member of the Censor Board, Dr Nandini Sardesai says, "This is ignorance on the part of society. If there is negligible or no presence of Jews in Nagpur why can't the civil society as a whole stand up and protest? While censoring movies we have to watch out for every word so that sentiments are not hurt. So just because their (Jews) numbers are not huge you don't value their sentiments? This glorification of Hitler is shocking".
Anil Bobade, ACP, Special Branch told TOI that no one can use names which offend religious sentiments, and criminal case can be registered against the promoters. Bobade said, "We were not aware of this shop. Till now no one has filed a complaint, but we will surely check up."
The owner of Hitler's Den, Ghosal said, "It is unfair to ask us to change the name. If people feel bad about the name, we are sorry about it".
