Vedike cries foul over ‘saffronisation’ of textbooks

MANGALORE: Karnataka Komu Souhardha Vedike is gearing up to fight legally and socially what it describes an apparent move by the BJP government to 'saffronise' social sciences textbooks of class V and VIII from next academic year. The textbooks, according to the vedike, will go for printing in the next three days. The government is spending about Rs 14 crore on printing of the new textbooks.
"While the BJP government has exhibited its overt communal agenda in ways more than one since its came to power in Karnataka, the saffonization of textbooks is their way of covert communalization. The draft of the textbooks, copies of which available with the vedike, is a clear example of BJP's way of spreading Sangh Parivar ideology," KL Ashok, general secretary of the vedike said while speaking to reporters here on Saturday. He also read out excerpts from the draft copies in the press meet.
Referring to topics on Dasa and Vachana Sahitya mentioned in the textbooks, Ashok said there was no mention of Purandara Dasa, regarded as father of Dasa Sahitya, or Basavanna with regard to Vachana Sahitya. "Akka Mahadevi's birth place Uduthadi has been mentioned as a place in Thirthahalli taluk in Shimoga district, whereas it is in Shikaripura taluk of the same district. Such factual and historical gaffes are too many to count," he added.
On the Baba Budangiri issue in Chikmagalur on which the vedike has had a long standing battle with the state government, Ashok said, "The draft text says the hill is home to 'Datta Peeta' in clear violation of Supreme Court's judgement which in late 1990s had ordered a status quo on the issue. We are planning to take up the issue legally and preparations are afoot to translate the text into English for the benefit of the court," Ashok said.
In addition, the vedike with help from historians and writers is also contemplating to stage dharnas in front of the house of Vishveswar Hegde Kageri, minister for primary and secondary education in Bangalore shortly. "Litterateurs including U R Ananthamurthy, and Chandrashekar Kambhar have expressed their support. The state government must withdraw these textbooks or face protests from the vedike," he added.

''Komu Souharda Vedike strongly condemns the district administration’s act of providing an opportunity for pooja and darshan of Datta Padukas, keeping them in a shed outside the cave,'' said Vedike State General Secretary K L Ashok.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said “the district administration has violated the Supreme Court’s order dated December 1, 2008. The BJP government has misused its power to pressurise the district administration to violate the court order.”
“When ‘bhoomipooja’ was performed for the repair of the cave, MP D V Sadanand Gowda, District-in-Charge Minister K S Eshwarappa and MLA C T Ravi had secretly taken the Datta idol near the Darga and performed pooja, which was a breach of the court order,” Ashok said. “Though there is no scope for any religious rituals other than Uroos in Bababudangiri, the Sangh Pariwar has committed contempt of court by celebrating Datta Jayanthi, and performing Ganahoma, Satyanarayanapooja and Datta Homa,” he criticised.
Contempt of court complaint will be filed against D V Sadanand Gowda and C T Ravi. Awareness will be created state-wide against the unconstitutional acts of the government, he announced.
Scapegoat
Vedike Assistant Secretary Gouse Mohiuddin said the State government has made the Deputy Commissioner scapegoat who cleverly handled the entire episode. The government thinks that the officials need not abide by the law of the land but should obey the principles of Sangh Pariwar, he said.
“The Komu Souharda Vedike will further intensify its struggle from next year. It will create obstacles for the programmes of the Pariwar. It will launch a movement to dethrone the BJP,” he informed.
Popular Front of India District Secretary Fairoz said the Sangh Pariwar is trying to convert Bababudangiri, a symbol of religious harmony, into Ayodhya of South.
Congress’ demand
District Congress President M L Murthy has urged that investigation should be conducted into the issue, i.e., who had pressurised the DC regarding Datta Padukas. “Whoever may be the official or the minister who pressurised the DC, should be brought down from power,” he said.
‘Include Mujawar in panel’
Our stand is not that the cave should not be repaired. Such desire may be there with ‘foolish’ MLA C T Ravi. We naturally had doubts regarding the BJP government that had assigned the work of repairing the cave to a company that actually evicts buildings, and that violated the court orders from the very beginning. Court order violated, says CPI(M)
Bangalore: The State Government has violated the order of the Supreme Court by allowing performance of additional rituals at Bababudangiri in Chikmagalur district, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) alleged on Wednesday. In a statement issued here, party’s State committee secretary V.J.K. Nair said the State Government had shown disregard to the law of the land by allowing the persons belonging to Sangh Parivar to perform such rituals. He also alleged that these acts of the Government amounted to encouraging communal forces while demanding action against those responsible for conduct of rituals in violation of court order. — Staff Reporter

You are all aware of the consistent struggle by the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike for the past 6 years against the poisonous spread of communal hatred. In this struggle you have been a supporter and participant in one way or another. Unfortunately, Karnataka’s present circumstance has placed additional responsibility on all of us.
First, with the BJP government coming to power in Karnataka, the communal forces have gained strength. We have been witness to the state wide attacks on the churches, increasing atrocities against Dalits and the manner of conduct in Bababudangiri. This is perhaps testimony to the increasing communalization on the social, administration, educational fronts.
Second, the recent terror attacks in Mumbai have shaken the entire country. Muslim fundamentalism, Hindutva fundamentalism and communalisation have in turn been strengthening each other. As a consequence, the harmony and democracy of this state has been destroyed.
It has become the responsibility of every democratic and peace loving person to oppose these forces due to these two reasons. Last month, based on these issues, there was an intense discussion within the Central Committee of the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike. Following these discussions, we met with several progressive organizations. As a result of all these interactions, a decision to organize a convention which would truly reflect Karnataka’s democratic and harmonious nature was reached. The convention would necessarily unite all progressive, democratic organizations which believe in communal harmony for the state.
In the context of this decision, a convention will be held in Chikmaglur on December 28 and 29, 2008 which will bring together people of multiple faiths, religions and beliefs. The convention will adopt a central slogan of Indians uniting to work against terrorism and communalism.
As you are aware the Vedike’s work for the past 6 years has resulted in the defeat of a communalization of Bababudangiri. We have been successful in putting an end to all communal agendas and conspiracies in that region. But with the BJP government coming into power, these agendas have again sprung to life – the government has misused its power and reach to foment new rites and rituals at Bababudangiri. The High Court recently overturned a previous judgement which explicitly stated that only rituals which were in practice prior to 1975 could be followed in Bababudangiri. The latest High Court judgement states that the rituals should be scrutinized yet again. On the basis of this judgement, in October, homas and havanas were conducted during Datta Mala Abhiyan for the first time since the struggle began. In the same manner, even during Datta Jayanthi, homas, havanas and ‘religious meetings’ that were communally provocative were held extremely close to the Dargah in violation of the spirit of the shrine.
When the Vedike and other like-minded organizations and people approached the Supreme Court in the matter, the Supreme Court too upheld a decision banning brahminical rituals at the place. Given this background, we feel that organizing a convention that talks of communal harmony should be held in Chikmaglur itself.
We intend to bring together progressive organizations, heads of religious matts, litterateurs, filmmakers and artists, singers, and many others on those two days. We have conceptualised various programmes to highlight the fact that India and Karnataka has always had a rich tradition of plurality and communal harmony. These include an inter-religous meeting, a meeting of different organizations that are working in their own ways to uphold the culture of harmony, literary meets which will bring together poets and writers who have contributed to this culture, cultural programmes, art shows by senior and junior artists and a discussion with the usually reticent film stars who are now willing to associate with people’s movements...many other similar sessions will be held.
We appeal to you to not only be present with us on those days but to join us in the organizational aspects as well. As the appended budget reflects the entire programme is likely to cost between Rs.7 lakhs. We would be happy to discuss with you various ways in which you can contribute to this effort.

Seeking action: Members of the Karnataka Forum for Dignity staging a protest in Bangalore on Friday demanding the dismissal of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Bangalore: The Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD) on Friday staged a demonstration demanding the dismissal of Narendra Modi Government in Gujarat in the light of the revelations made by the sting operation by Tehelka, a news magazine. The expose, broadcast on Headlines Today channel, showed Sangh Parivar activists boasting about killings of Muslims in the post-Godhra carnage in 2002.
Speaking at the protest, Syed Kaleemullah, Vice-President of KFD, said that the footage proved that the killings “were not spontaneous, but were part of a pre-meditated genocide.” The sting operation had proved beyond doubt that top Sangh Parivar functionaries and Mr. Modi were behind the “gruesome plot” against Muslims. The Centre should, therefore, dismiss the Modi Government without delay, he added. The statements of people such as Babu Bajrangi, an accused in the Naroda Patia violence, was “shocking to a civilised and democratic society,” said Mr. Kaleemullah.
‘Warning to Karnataka’
Gauri Lankesh of the Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike, speaking at the protest, said that the expose was a lesson to Karnataka, considering that Sangh Parivar members had “repeatedly declared that they were out to make the State into another Gujarat and Bababudangiri into another Ayodhya.”
Prof. G.K. Ramaswamy, also of the Vedike, said that all secular and democratic minded people should come together to defeat the designs of Sangh Parivar elements in spreading the poison of communal hatred.
Dismissing the Modi Government was important in the interest of Indian democracy and Constitution, he added.
‘Modi behaved like Hitler’
President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge told The Hindu, that Mr. Modi had “behaved like Hitler” while he was expected to protect all people including minorities. Terming the massacre as “a black spot on the civil society, democracy and the Constitution,” he said that people like Mr. Modi had no right to be in public life.
He denied the BJP criticism that the Congress was behind the operation. Who was behind it was immaterial in the light of the horrifying evidence of communal hatred, he added.
‘Irrefutable proof’
President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) Mirajuddeen Patel said that the sting operation was irrefutable proof of the involvement of Government machinery in the massacre. Mr. Modi should step down, as he can no longer deny his role in the killing of Muslims, he added.
Developments in Karnataka, including the burning of the Tamil Nadu-bound bus over Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s reaction on the Ram Sethu issue, had proved what Sangh Parivar elements were capable of in the State of Karnataka when in power, said Mr. Patel.
Silent demonstration

The KFD and Komu Souharda Vedike held a silent demonstration in front of the Gandhi Statue here demanding immediate dismissal of the BJP-led Government headed by Narendra Modi.
In a memorandum submitted to the President, the organisations said that that the sting operation exposed misdeeds of Mr. Modi and several of his Ministers.
Suo motu action sought
Human rights and civil liberties activists have demanded suo motu action against the alleged perpetrators of the crime.
Expressing shock over the confessions of Sangh Parivar functionaries, professor in Political Science at the University of Mysore and a member of People’s Union for Civil Liberties Muzaffar Assadi said that it was a known fact that post-Godhra violence was not spontaneous swell of anger but “genocide” planned and executed by Sangh Parivar activists.While the people in Gujarat were afraid to raise their voice against the “pogram,” it was secular and democratic forces, which exposed Sangh Parivar’s deeds, he said.
The Judiciary should take cognisance of the exposure and take suo motu action against the alleged perpetrators of the crime, as commissions of inquiry appointed by the State were not in a position to provide justice, he added.
Secretary of the district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Prabhakar said that there was nothing wrong in courts taking cognisance of the exposure and taking suo motu against the perpetrators. He said the Election Commission should bar the culprits, including Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi from contesting in the coming elections to the Gujarat Assembly.
Noted writer and president of Sarvodaya Karnataka Party Devanuru Mahadev said that it was the judiciary, which could do something and take suo motu action against those who involved in the massacre.
President of the district unit of People’s Union for Civil Liberties Lakshminarayana said that it was horrifying evidence and courts and the National Human Rights Commission should take up this on priority basis and punish those involved in the massacre.
Convener of the district committee of Socialist Unity Centre of India Shashidhar said that though there was enough evidence for the genocide, the inquiry was not conducted impartially and perpetrators were roaming freely. Now the exposure of Tehelka pin-pointed the crime and it was time to act against those involved, however powerful they might be, he said.

President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) Mirajuddeen Patel said that the sting operation was irrefutable proof of the involvement of Government machinery in the massacre. Mr. Modi should step down, as he can no longer deny his role in the killing of Muslims, he added.
Developments in Karnataka, including the burning of the Tamil Nadu-bound bus over Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s reaction on the Ram Sethu issue, had proved what Sangh Parivar elements were capable of in the State of Karnataka when in power, said Mr. Patel.
Silent demonstration

The KFD and Komu Souharda Vedike held a silent demonstration in front of the Gandhi Statue here demanding immediate dismissal of the BJP-led Government headed by Narendra Modi.
In a memorandum submitted to the President, the organisations said that that the sting operation exposed misdeeds of Mr. Modi and several of his Ministers.
Suo motu action sought
Human rights and civil liberties activists have demanded suo motu action against the alleged perpetrators of the crime.
Expressing shock over the confessions of Sangh Parivar functionaries, professor in Political Science at the University of Mysore and a member of People’s Union for Civil Liberties Muzaffar Assadi said that it was a known fact that post-Godhra violence was not spontaneous swell of anger but “genocide” planned and executed by Sangh Parivar activists.While the people in Gujarat were afraid to raise their voice against the “pogram,” it was secular and democratic forces, which exposed Sangh Parivar’s deeds, he said.
The Judiciary should take cognisance of the exposure and take suo motu action against the alleged perpetrators of the crime, as commissions of inquiry appointed by the State were not in a position to provide justice, he added.
Secretary of the district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Prabhakar said that there was nothing wrong in courts taking cognisance of the exposure and taking suo motu against the perpetrators. He said the Election Commission should bar the culprits, including Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi from contesting in the coming elections to the Gujarat Assembly.
Noted writer and president of Sarvodaya Karnataka Party Devanuru Mahadev said that it was the judiciary, which could do something and take suo motu action against those who involved in the massacre.
President of the district unit of People’s Union for Civil Liberties Lakshminarayana said that it was horrifying evidence and courts and the National Human Rights Commission should take up this on priority basis and punish those involved in the massacre.
Convener of the district committee of Socialist Unity Centre of India Shashidhar said that though there was enough evidence for the genocide, the inquiry was not conducted impartially and perpetrators were roaming freely. Now the exposure of Tehelka pin-pointed the crime and it was time to act against those involved, however powerful they might be, he said.

CHIKMAGALUR: Komu Souharda Vedike activists started their indefinite hunger strike and dharna inside district prison here at 7 pm on Saturday.
They were demanding that the DC and SP explain under what sections they were arrested in the morning. Talking to this website's newspaper, a KSV spokesperson said the police had booked false cases against them. ‘‘Though we promised that we would not violate any conditions laid down by the district administration, we were picked up from lodges and houses and jailed,’’ she complained.
‘‘It appears that the district administration is planning to shift us to prisons in Belgaum and Bellary. However, the district administration had left Sangh Pariwar activists free though they violated all norms,’’ she added.
Earlier in the morning when KSV activists tried to take out a procession on KM Road, police arrested and jailed them. The district administration claimed that the KSV was not permitted to take out its Souharda Yatra.
Seer Basavaraj of Mansurmutt, Gowri Lankesh, Nagari Babaiah, K L Ashok, Dr Vasu and other KSV activists were among the 135 arrested. While Ashok, Nagari Babaiah and others were picked up from lodges, Gowri Lankesh and 40 activists were arrested for taking out a protest rally on KM Road. In the afternoon, Seer Basavaraj and others were arrested for blocking the road at Hanumantappa extension. A few others were taken in to custody at the bus stand.
SHOBHA YATRA: The Sangh Pariwar took out the Shobha Yatra on Saturday after two years. Devotees participated in large numbers.
The Yatra began at 3:25 pm from Kamadenu Ganapathi Temple and reached the district playground by 6 pm. State convener of Bajrang Dal Mahendrakumar, MLAs C T Ravi and V Sunil Kumar led the yatra through the main streets of city. The district administration limited the number to 2500.
Seer Basavaraj and others were arrested for blocking the road at Hanumantappa extension.
