The proposed marriage of Ashita with Shakeel of Mandya has snowballed into a controversy with some pro-Hindu elements opposing the alliance.

The members of Left Parties’ Joint Committee (LPJC) have condemned the stance of right-wing organisations such as the Bajrang Dal and Rashtriya Swayamsevaka Sangha for opposing the interfaith marriage.

Addressing a press meet in Mysuru on Friday, CPM district unit secretary K Basavaraju said that though the families of the boy and girl had given their consent for the marriage, rightist outfits were branding the alliance as ‘Love Jihad’ to incite communal violence. He said that the district administration and city police should provide security for the marriage scheduled for April 17 in Mysuru. The LPJC members would attend the marriage to express their solidarity, he added.
