Karat, claimed that police were putting pressure on residents to enter into an agreement to allow a shakha on the day of Eid.
Led by CPM politburo member Brinda Karat, Muslims from Northeast Delhi’s Shriram Colony met Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday, urging him to prevent communal tension “because of RSS actions” in their area.
Karat, who spoke to the Lt-Governor, claimed that police were putting pressure on residents to enter into an agreement to allow a shakha on the day of Eid.
Earlier, the same delegation met Police Commissioner B S Bassi on July 3 for police intervention, but there were no developments, Karat said.
“We informed the Lt-Governor about the police pressure on local residents for a so-called compromise — that the shakha should be conducted up to 7 am and the Eid namaz could be held thereafter. The people of the area are sceptical about this, given their experience last year about a written agreement that has not been implemented till date,” Karat said.
She said RSS shakha meetings in this area should be stopped “particularly during the Eid festivities on July 17-19”.
Shriram Colony residents alleged that the RSS organises morning shakhas at Rajiv Park and do not allow them — it is a Muslim-dominated colony — to enter the park between 6 am and 7.30 am.
Residents said the shakha members are not from their locality and have “purposely chosen” a Muslim-dominated area.
