Appeal to AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal To Take His Oath of office as the Chief Minister of Delhi not in the name of any religious denomination

11 February 2015

Dear Mr Arvind Kejriwal, Leader of the Aam Admi Party

I write to you in the aftermath of the spectacular electoral victory of the Aam Admi Party in the 2015 New Delhi assembly elections. By any stretch of imagination this is a victory bigger than that of your political party and belongs to a huge mass of citizens of Delhi who have put their hopes on your party and who are from diverse backgrounds and identities.

The BJP had ridden to power in large parts across India in 2014 by whipping up religious sentiments and a socially divisive politics, this has done immense damage by polarising Indians.

Last year when your party came to power you had taken oath as the Chief Minister of the Delhi Assembly in the name of god, a practice followed by many in India and elsewhere.

I earnestly appeal to you to consider taking your oath of office on 14 February 2015 by not invoking your private faith and religious belonging during that public ceremony. Do not take this free suggestion as an intrusion on your freedom of religion.

Please swear by secular principles when you take oath and by doing this send a message to all in Delhi and in India that you and your government represent people of all origins and not allow any form of communally divisive agenda to creep into politics.

your sincerely

Harsh Kapoor
