CUTTACK: The Orissa high court has issued notices to the chief secretary, home secretary and secretary of general administration department in connection with a PIL, seeking demolition of temples and religious structures built on the premises of government offices, government educational institutions and police stations. "The division bench of Justices I Mohanty and B N Mohapatra has directed government officials to file reply within four weeks," said petitioner's counsel Khirod Rout.

The PIL filed by a social worker Abhiram Mallick had alleged that the constitution clearly states that the state shall have no religion of its own and the state agencies and instrumentalities shall not preach any religion in their public life or propagate any religion directly or indirectly, but government officials are violating it. Temples are being built on the premises of police stations, schools, colleges and government offices. Even the highest office of the state, the secretariat, is no exception.
