Saturday, December 2, 2006 (Chikmagalur):

There is a huge police presence in Chikmagalur in Karnataka for the BJP's Shobha yatra on Saturday.

The BJP, which is in power in Karnataka for the first time, is going ahead with its Shoba Yatra at the communally sensitive Bababudangiri hills in Chikmagalur district, also the site of a Sufi shrine.

Coalition partner the JD(S) is not keen on the yatra but is reluctant to antagonise its ally.

The BJP organised information yatras ahead of the event to present their stand to the public. There are attempts being made to stop the yatra from taking place.

Activists of the Karnataka communal harmony forum were arrested in Chikmagalur on Saturday morning ahead of their protest against the yatra.
