Gandhi Peace Prize is conferred on Gita Press! Better to change the name of the award to "Godse Peace Price"! Why? Because two key members of the Hindu Mahasabha and founders of Gita Press, Hanuman Prasad Poddar and Jay Dalal Goenka, were arrested for their roles in Gandhi's assassination!
G.D. Birla, who was a close associate of the duo at that time, described them as promoting "Satanic Dharma, and not Sanatan Dharma." Furthermore, Gita Press has been completely silent on Gandhi's assassination. There is not even a single mention, as if it never happened. Akshaya Mukul extensively writes about all these details with evidence in his profound book titled "Gita Press and The Making of Hindu India."
The Gita Press is being awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize by the committee chaired by the Prime Minister, as an official recognition of the Indian Republic. The organization has been publishing Hindu religious books and magazines since 1923, making it the largest publishing house of its kind. Poddar, Goenka, and Ghanashyam Jalan played significant roles in shaping the divisive Hindutva ideology through the Gita Press.
Akshaya Mukul, the author of the book, describes the promotion of the Gita Press as the work of "propagators of Sangh ideology." Moreover, during the 1930s, when Gandhi was engaged in the non-cooperation movement and temple entry campaigns, Poddar and Gita Press actively criticized him, asserting that their actions were in line with traditional Hindu beliefs. Poddar, an active member of the Hindu Mahasabha, continued his criticisms until the 1980s.
After Nelson Mandela, Julius Nyerere, Arundhati Roy, and Desmond Tutu, the Gandhi Peace Prize is being awarded to a fiercely Hindu publication that remained silent on Gandhi’s assassination and actively worked to erase his vision and ideology. Do we call the mindset to honour people who colluded for Gandhi's assassination "Vishwa Guru" thinking? In Modi's India, irony committed suicide long ago. Who is the next awardee? Godse? Savarkar? Dear Modi, please change the name of the award. The Mahatma who lived and died for the nation deserves that much kindness.
