Couple attacked in Haryana, man stripped to prove identity
CHANDIGARH: A self-styled religious pressure group forced a man to strip in public
in the broad daylight at a bus stand in Rewari last month to confirm
his religion. The group suspected him and his wife, living in the area
for last 10 months, had an interfaith marriage. The humiliated couple
lodged a police complaint, but had to complain to the Haryana CM
grievance cell after no action. Police summoned the couple along with
the group of the accused to investigate the matter.
The matter became public on Sunday, when the man's wife and their lawyer reached the police post at the bus stand for the investigation by the police.
However, the woman alleged the police as well as some people accompanying the accused had forced her to sign a compromise agreement and her original complaint was again sidelined.
The incident occurred on October 10. The couple had alighted from a bus coming from Nuh at Rewari's inter-state bus stand when they were accosted by a group of men and women. The couple was physically abused and stopped from leaving before proving their religious identity. The man was forced to remove his clothes by the members of the group as they suspected the couple had eloped from their homes and had an interfaith marriage.

After proving their religious identity to the satisfaction of the group, the couple was let off. The couple had lodged a complaint with in-charge of the police post at the Rewari bus stand the same day over their treatment. No progress by the police in the matter forced the couple to file a complaint with the Haryana CM Grievance Cell.
Sources said police called the couple only after the complaint reached the CM window . The woman claimed as her husband was unwell, he did not turn up for the police meeting.
Amid arguments with the representatives of both the sides, the complainant left the police post, alleging she was forced to sign compromise documents.
Rewari SP Sangeeta Kalia, however, assured the couple of fair investigation in the matter and deployed a DSP-level officer for supervision of their complaint. "Now the DSP will not only ensure a fair investigation, but we shall also take adequate action, in case any of our cops was found intimidating the complainant," said the Rewari SP. "She can freely come and discuss her issue with the DSP as well as in my office. Justice will be done and we shall ensure the fair investigation," the SP said.
