New Delhi, July 15: Eminent social activist Shabnam Hashmi has sought a thorough probe into death threats to her allegedly by a Delhi policeman over phone. She has written a letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner and sent its copy to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
"I was directly threatened that I will be killed in an encounter," Hashmi told reporters at a press conference at the Constitution Club here on Saturday. She informed that a man who claimed to be Sub Inspector Sandip Malik from Lajpat Nagar police Station threatened her over phone Friday night.
The cop told her that there is the new law according to which whoever doesn't have an Aadhaar card and address proof should be surrounded and killed.
Shabnam Hashmi is one of the founding trustees of Pehchan - an NGO that runs a coaching centre in Jaitpur area of Delhi. Haseen, husband of Mubina, one of the passouts of this centre, received a call from cop Sandip Malik. The policeman threatened him and asked him to come to the police station. His wife informed the director of Pehchan Farida Khan who passed on this information to Shabnam Hashmi. Shabnam called the policeman just to know why he was calling Haseen to the Police station. The police used filthy language for Shabnam and threatened her.
At the press conference, Shabnam released the audio recording of her conversation with the policeman. In the audio, the policeman is clearly heard saying that there was instruction to policemen cornor and kill those who don't have Aadhaar and address proof.
Besides Hashmi, the press conference featured filmmaker Saba Dewan, former member of Planning Commission Sayeeda Hamid and Haseen, husband of Mubina.
“What is more troubling is the remark of the policeman that if you don’t have an Aadhaar card, you will be cornered and killed. It’s a big strike at our sensibility,” Sayeeda Hamid said.
Saba Dewan said, “We condemn what happened with Shabnam Hashmi. If such incident can happen in Delhi – the capital of the country – and with eminent human rights activist like Shabnam Hashmi, then we can imagine about lawlessness in other parts of the country”
ANHAD, a civil rights group, contacted the Lajpat Nagar police station to know about the caller cop. The police station confirmed that it has a constable by the name of Sandip Malik but he is not Sub Inspector.
