VHP To Unveil Ram Mandir Blueprint for Ayodhya

NEW DELHI: The arrival of stones for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workshop in Ayodhya two weeks ago brought back the focus on building the Ram temple. To make sure the issue stays alive in public consciousness, VHP will make a renewed bid through the Ujjain Kumbh Mela and a seminar in the national capital where a blueprint for the temple is likely to be unveiled.

When the Simhastha Kumbh Mela takes place in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh in April, the ruling BJP will be watching, albeit with trepidation. Through the congregation of Hindu saints, VHP is likely to bring a resolution on constructing a grand Ram temple. The Kumbh has always been VHP’s launch pad for raising the Ram Janma Bhoomi issue. The fresh call from Hindu seers, ahead of elections in politically important Uttar Pradesh scheduled for early 2017, may also force the BJP to take sides.

Party sources said that BJP cannot neglect the temple as it has been part of their manifesto. “BJP and RSS believe that the temple will be built after the court order or through mutual consent,” a BJP office bearer said.

Minister of State for Culture and Tourism Mahesh Sharma had said last week, “Our party and government have already given their mandate on this issue. We want to build the Ram mandir, but we will either follow the Supreme Court’s order or come to common conclusion about it. This is why it is taking time.”

Another keenly watched event next week will be the two-day seminar in Delhi University, organised by Arundhati Vashishth Anusandhan Peeth, a research body founded by former VHP chief Ashok Singhal. Singhal was scheduled to make the inaugural remarks on January 9, but with his demise on November 17 last year, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy (who heads the Peeth) will unveil a “blueprint” for building a temple.

VHP general secretary Champat Rai said, “There is no new push for the Ram temple. It has always been there.”

A RSS insider said, “As a promise of a temple by BJP and Hindutva organisations helped the PM win, a similar move before the 2017 Assembly elections makes sense electorally so that the temple is built before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.”

One of the solutions offered by Swamy and Singhal in September was that the government can issue a notice to the Babri hereditary supervisor for acquiring the land and offer another site for the mosque.
