PUNE: A magisterial court has extended till June 9 the police custody of Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) leader Dhananjay Desai in connection with an offence related to distribution of pamphlets carrying inciting and hate messages at Kadam Vak vasti in the Pune rural area. The Loni Kalbhor police had registered the offence on March 17.
Since March, the police have effected phased arrest of 11 out of the 12 suspects in the case. Desai and two others, Appa Bapu Gore (25) of Sortapwadi and Uttam Vijay Gaikwad (23) of village Tarade, were arrested on June 4 and the court had remanded them in police custody till Saturday.
The police sought a further extension of their custody by five days on the grounds that Desai has not been cooperating with the investigators and that he has resorted to evasive replies regarding the recovery of inflammatory pamphlets, calendars and documents seized during a search operation at his house in Paud village. The police said they have to know the source where Desai got the seized material printed and also his associates who encouraged him to print these material.
Following a brief proceeding, the JMFC court extended Desai's police custody till June 9 and ordered sent Gore and Gaikwad to judicial custody.
All the suspects arrested so far in the case have been charged with attempt to create animosity between different groups on the basis of religion, race, language, place of birth and posing a threat to national integrity and harmony.
