NEW DELHI: The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has carried out changes in a few textbooks after receiving representations from different social groups.
In a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Monday, minister of state for HRD Shashi Tharoor said Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had received representations from different social groups regarding some content in the history textbooks of Class IX and XI. In Class XI textbook, specific problems were raised about a sub-section - 'Islam Ka Udai Aur Vistar' - and in Class IX textbook, issues were raised regarding disgraceful remarks on the Nadar community.
CBSE, Tharoor said, presented the issues before its committee on courses of social sciences. The committee recommended changes. Subsequently, NCERT amended the textbooks in consultation with Textbook Development Committee involving eminent educationists and subject experts.
A reference was also received regarding alleged derogatory words in the Hindi text books of Class I, VI, IX and XI. NCERT had informed HRD ministry that sometimes, writers express themselves in words which reflect the realities of contemporary society. Such expressions were to be taken in totality and not in isolation. Some complaints, including the above mentioned reference, were received in 2006 also. These were examined by the committee constituted under the chairmanship of Yash Pal and suitable changes were made in NCERT textbooks based on its recommendations.
