Panel to look into reports of children’s deaths at Muzaffarnagar relief camps

The camps were set up in the aftermath of September’s communal violence

Spurred into action by the Supreme Court rap, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday constituted a high-powered committee to look into the veracity of the reported deaths of children due to cold in the relief camps in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts and suggest remedial measures. The committee will be headed by the Commissioner of Meerut Division, Manjit Singh. The District Magistrates and Chief Medical Officers of the two districts will be its members. The relief camps were set up in the aftermath of September’s communal violence in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts, which claimed the lives of about 50 people and rendered several thousand homeless.
