Jamaat and its friends must understand that the country is not theirs to burn
Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, hoist placards containing pictures of 10 top Jamaat leaders, accused and convicted in war crime cases, demanding their unconditional release at a rally of the 18-party alliance in Suhrawardy Udyan on Friday

Jamaat-e-Islami, in a rally organised to protest the newly formed election-time government, has not only admitted to guilt in the Sitakunda incident, but has also threatened to set the whole country “on fire” should the Quader Molla verdict be changed.
We denounce in the strongest terms such self serving and violent activities which serve no purpose but to assault the rights of ordinary citizens and cripple the country by inciting terror. These are the actions of a group that has shown no regard whatsoever for the public interest and has only engaged in violence and destruction to make their demands known.
Saying the Sitakunda incident was “just a sample” is a clear admission of guilt on Jamaat’s part. Following the death of one of their leaders, Jamaat had gone on a rampage, torching three trucks and vandalising about 10 to 15 vehicles on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Their statement that they would “turn the whole country into Sitakundu” shows a complete lack of interest in reasonable discourse.
It also shows that their political vocabulary does not extend beyond street violence. As the deadly political impasse between the ruling party and leading opposition BNP pushes the nation to the brink, Jamaat is content to only add fuel to the fire.
The common people of this country have had enough. Jamaat and its friends must understand that the country is not theirs to burn.
