AHMEDABAD: The video footage of a sting operation conducted on Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi and VHP leader Jaideep Patel and others accused in the post-Godhra riots was shown in the courtroom during the hearing of Naroda Gam case on Friday.

The footage was showed in the presence of all accused persons before the cross-examination of journalist Ashish Khetan, who conducted the sting operation in 2007. The footage was first aired in October 2007 showing Bajrangi and others making extra-judicial confession of their acts. Khetan was quizzed by defence counsel C K Shah for nearly four hours. The questioning will continue on February 4. The special SIT court hearing Naroda Gam case had earlier refused to permit the SIT to conduct voice-spectrography on the accused. The court had also refused to admit the evidence in form of audio and visuals. This led the SIT to move Gujarat high court and obtain permission to place the sting operation as evidence before the court.

When special judge Jyotsna Yagnik was designated to preside over the hearing of this case, Bajrangi and former minister Maya Kodnani opposed her appointment saying that she had admitted sting operation in the Naroda Patia case, and hence she might reach to same conclusion in this case also. However, they have failed to convince the courts in this regard.
