Jamaat: Non-consensual sex within marriage not rape

The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, in a resolution passed on Sunday at its State conference, said non-consensual intercourse within marriage “is not rape” and “should be dealt with separately”.

While welcoming the Justice Verma Commission’s observations on sexual crimes committed by men in uniform in regions where the Armed Forces Special Powers Act is in force, the Jamat senior council said it did not agree with the recommendations of the commission on the issue of marital rape.

The convention also commended the State government for schemes such as Vajpayee Arogyasri and Sakala, but expressed concern over “unacceptable treatment meted out to Muslim youth under the garb of fighting terrorism”.

Calling for “fair treatment for these youth until the law reaches its logical conclusion”, the convention demanded that “police officers who frame innocents must be punished equally strongly as terrorist themselves should be”.

The convention, which was held at the Khuddus Saheb Eidga Maidan, was attended by a large number of delegates from across the State.
