At least 27 people were killed as the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir ran riot across the country centring Sayedee's verdict on Thursday.

The victims included the cops, activists of Jamaat, Shibir, Juba League and common people.

Of the deceased, six people, including three cops, were killed in Gaibandha, four in Thakurgaon, three in Satkhira, two each in Rangpur, Noakhali, Chittagong, Moulvibazar and Sirajganj while one each in Dinajpur, Natore, Cox's Bazar and Chapainawabganj.

GAIBANDHA

Soon after a verdict awarding death sentence to Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee was declared, several thousand supporters of the Islamic party attacked Bamondanga police outpost in Sundarganj upazila in the afternoon.

They beat three policemen to death and set fire to the outpost, reports our Gaibandha correspondent.

In response, police opened fire, leaving three people killed.

The policemen were named as constable Nadim, Bablu and Hazrat Ali.

THAKURGAON

About 1,500 Jamaat-Shibir men took out a procession from Goreya Bazaar in Sadar upazila after the verdict and attacked 10/15 shops and 10/12 houses of Awami League men and the Hindu community.

Police and BGB teams rushed there and fired blank shots and tear shells to disperse the attackers.

Encircling the law enforcers, the marauding Jamaat-Shibir men started to throw brick-bats and, at one stage, closed in to fight them.

Police opened fire to escape, leaving one Firoz, 24, dead on the spot and about eight to 10 injured.

Rubel, a 13-year-old Shibir supporter, was found lying dead, bullet-hit, inside a shop later.

When locals rushed one Munir Uddin, 20, and Nironjon, 25, of Goreya village to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, doctors declared them dead, said Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Thakrugaon Police Station.

RANGPUR

At least two people were killed and 57 including a cop injured during clashes between the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir and police in Mithapukur and Peergachha upazilas of the northwestern district of Rangpur on Thursday.

The deceased are Shibir activists -- Nurul Huda and Sadek Ali, 35, claimed Mostaque Ahmed, Rangpur city president of the student wing of Jamaat.

The clash took place near Mithapukur Upazila Parishad around 2:45pm soon after Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, our Rangpur correspondent reports quoting Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mithapukur Police Station.

The activists of Jamaat-Shibir were staging demonstrations at Mithapukur Bazaar since morning putting barricade on road.

They hurled brick chips at police as the law enforcers asked them to free the road, Kamal said.

Police charged baton and also opened fire to disperse the agitators that left two people killed and 50 injured.

In Peergachha upazila, a sub-inspector of police and five Jamaat-Shibir men were injured by bullets during a clash at Kadamtali.

The injured cop is Mizan, a sub-inspector of Peergachha Police Station, said Bazlur Rashid, OC of the police station.

Another police official was also injured during the clash.

Similar to Mithapukur incident, the Jamaat activists got into a clash with police after Sayedee's verdict.

As police opened fire to disperse them, five Shibir men were wounded, Rashid said.

Doctors pronounced Khokon dead after he was rushed to Noakhali Medical College Hospital at 4:00pm, said medical sources.

Jamaat men went on the rampage after the Sayedee verdict was announced.

CHAPAINAWABGANJ

A Shibir activist, Nasiruddin, 22, was killed as cops opened fire on the marauding Shibir men in the town.

The clash erupted around 5:30pm when the activists hurled several cocktails targeting a patrolling police car, said Abu Sayeed, a sub-inspector of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station.

Soon after the Sayedee verdict was pronounced, around 500 Jamaat-Shibir men attacked the law enforcers at Binodpur Bazaar in the city, leaving two policemen including assistant commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police injured.

At least 50 cocktails were exploded during the attack.

The law enforcers and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) fired hundreds of gunshots and teargas canisters to bring the situation under control.
