‘The Secular Mode for India’

Saturday 1 September, 6.00 p.m.

HABIB TANVIR (1923-2009) was an all-round genius of the stage. He was a playwright, director, actor, singer, composer, lyricist, theorist, designer, teacher, and manager. In 1988, he co-wrote with Safdar Hashmi, and directed for Jana Natya Manch, the play Moteram ka Satyagraha. In all, he directed three productions for Janam. Habib sa’ab’s image is part of the public art project that was created for Studio Safdar by Chennai-based artist Pravin Kannanur in June 2012, and his spirit will continue to inspire Janam and Studio Safdar.

Deeply committed to the idea of a secular, progressive, democratic India, Habib sa’ab was also one of our most prominent public intellectuals. PROF. ROMILA THAPAR, one of India’s preeminent historians and public intellectuals, will pay tribute to Habib Tanvir by reflecting on a subject that goes to the heart of what his entire life and work stood for — secularism, and its meanings for India.
