Kashmir: growing divide between proponents of conservative Islam and Valley’s ancient Sufi creed

It was well past Isha, the Muslim night-time prayer, Peer Jalal-u-Din, a noted faith-healer in Srinagar, was crossing the lane leading his home at Batamaloo. He was a few steps from his gate when he heard a loud bang and a sharp pain in his leg stunned him. A bullet had pierced his right thigh, he turned around to face his assailants and was shot twice. [. . .] The attack, JK police says, originated from the growing sectarian divide in the Valley where proponents of conservative Islam and Valley’s ancient Sufi creed are busy carving out their exclusive domains. “The attack has sectarian overtones,” said Kashmir’s inspector general of police SM Sahai. He said Jalal-u-Din became the target of the militants “trying to push through their radical agenda”.
