The Supreme Court today criticised the Gujarat government for initiating criminal proceedings against social activist Teesta Setalvad for her alleged role in the illegal exhumation of bodies of 2002 riot victims, saying it is a “hundred per cent spurious case to victimise” her.

“This case is hundred per cent spurious. In other cases against the petitioner, there may be something,” said a bench of Justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Desai. The Gujarat government has lodged criminal proceedings against Setalvad in other riot-related cases too.

The court asked Gujarat government counsel Pradeep Ghosh to re-consider the FIR registered in the case “dispassionately”. “You should show some responsibility and tell the government not to proceed with the case,” the bench said.

The court posted the matter for hearing on March 23. The bench was hearing a petition by Setalvad against the Gujarat High Court order refusing to quash the FIR.
