In a hard hitting film “Jai Bhim… Comrade”, Anand Patwardhan traces the legacy of the unique democratic protest style of the Dalits through their stirring poetry and music and the story of Vilas Ghogre and other singers and poets. He captures the grand sweep of injustice to Dalits through individual stories.
The film shot at BIT chawl in Byculla is based in Mumbai, but it has a world-wide relevance. A Dalit leader in the film is heard saying, "We have a singer, a poet in every home." It is here that you realize the similarity between the fight for justice of the mostly lowly and oppressed of Indian people with that of Afro-Americans. Both share a strong tradition of music and poetry that provides them relief, strength and prepares them to fight against injustice.”
The film, shot over 14 years follows the music of protest of Maharashtra's Dalits. In an age of increasing bigotry and superstition, it is both a record of recent history as well as eloquent testimony to a rationalist tradition that has survived amongst the subaltern for thousands of years.
The film is getting presented for first time in Ahmedabad as part of the festival “Insaf ki Dagar par” to mark up 10th anniversary of Gujarat Carnage – 2002.
Please circulate the invitation widely along with attached poster; the screening is open for all.
