EC issues notice to BJP on campaign CD

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to serve notice to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the controversial CD brought out by its Uttar Pradesh unit. It has also decided to file cases against those involved in the matter under the Representation of People's Act.
The EC's action came a day after the BJP "withheld" the CD after it invited criticism over its contents on Babri Masjid issue and Godhra train fire.
The CD was brought out by the state unit in Lucknow apparently as part of the saffron party's high-pitched Hindutva campaign for the Assembly elections.
However, BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the CD was not released officially but was meant for the press.
The party was withholding it so that any portion found objectionable could be deleted, he added.
