Court restraint on funding of pilgrimages

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court has restrained the Centre and the State Governments from providing funds or financial subsidies for the Haj and pilgrimages of any other community.

Security arrangements

The Lucknow Bench, however, allowed them to make arrangements to ensure law and order and the safety of the people going on pilgrimage.

Passing the order on a writ filed by B.N. Shukla of the Shiv Sena in 1995, Justices A.K. Yog and O.N. Khandelwal granted six weeks for the Centre and the State Governments to file counter-affidavits and six weeks thereafter for submitting rejoinders.

The petition said the Governments should not pay any subsidy to Haj pilgrims out of the Central or State exchequer.

The final hearing will be held after the ``expiry of 12 weeks.'' — PTI
