Miscreants broke the arm of an Ambedkar statue it Kandhadu village near Marakkanam on Friday night. Police have filed a case and are looking for the culprits.

The statue was repaired overnight. On Saturday morning, villagers blocked traffic demanding that the culprits be arrested. So far, there is no indication that the act was communally motivated, the police said

According to a senior police officer, village panchayats were informed a month ago to construct cages around Ambedkar statues to prevent damage to them.

Villupuram district is communally sensitive, so the police have been working with the Dalits and asked them to prevent any kind of disrespect to the Ambedkar statues by constructing cages.
