VADODARA: Four panchayat officials were sacked in connection with a fraud in riot relief disbursement at Khanpur taluka of Panchmahal district. The officials were dismissed after orders in this regard by the state government for their alleged involvement in the fraud to the tune of Rs 1.38 crore.

An offence regarding the fraud was registered by deputy district development officer B M Bhabhor with the Panchmahal police after a Gujarat high court order in this regard. A public interest litigation regarding the alleged irregularities was filed by an NGO in the high court and had named 23 persons as respondents.

The high court was moved after a victim realised that there were large-scale irregularities in tjavascript:void(0)he distribution of relief. Those who did not suffer major losses were being paid huge sums while the deserving ones had to run from pillar to post for getting the relief money that was also not in tune with their losses.

Bhabhor said that a departmental inquiry was conducted against the dismissed officials and they were found guilty. He added that this was then forwarded to the state government that ordered that the officials must be sacked following which relevant orders were issued.

Those who have been dismissed from service include additional assistant engineer I K Raulji as well as clerks J J Joshi, S G Malek and V K Soni. A former taluka panchayat member from the BJP Anil Modi was arrested in connection with the offence earlier.

Large-scale rioting was witnessed in Khanpur taluka after the Sabarmati Express carnage in 2002. The rioting includes Pandarwada massacre which is one of the worst carnages in the state during the period.
