KOLKATA: As the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) made a strong pitch for a ban on cow slaughter at a mammoth rally on the Brigade Parade grounds on Sunday, a group of around 150 students took part in a march in the city against "Hindu fascism".

Organized by Andoloner Kolorob, a platform of college and university students in Kolkata, the procession took off from College Square and ended at Subodh Mullick Square.

Youngsters carried posters denouncing the VHP and its alleged attempt to forcefully impose practice of Hindu rituals on the people.

While some posters read "Mohan Bhagwat go back", others denounced "the attempt to divide the country on religious lines". "The fact that Hindu fundamentalist organizations are holding a meet in the city is a matter of grave concern to us. Our city has always been secular and cosmopolitan. We will not accept any attempt to destroy that," said a spokesperson for Andoloner Kolorob.
